ENGLAND REVAMP TRAINING SQUADS 29th September 2009
Following the annual progression of several players to the professional ranks, the English Golf Union has reshaped its training squads for coaching over the winter months of 2009 and into 2010.
The England Squad contains eleven confirmed players, four of whom played in the recent Walker Cup in America, plus four more who have been promoted from last year’s England A and Under 18 Squads. There could be further departures from the full England Squad depending on the outcome of the European Tour Qualifying School, hence a further seven players have been named on an invitational list from which players can be given coaching opportunities through the winter months.
The core squad contains a smaller number of players than in past years, the idea being to build on a trialled success of keeping the squads open where players can be moved in and out based on current form and the players’ needs at the time. In this respect, the England ‘A’ Squad will remain a ‘transitional squad’ aimed at players that (i) have just emerged from boys’ golf and require more time to mature into England players or (ii) might be slightly older but have shown significant improvement and performance levels that make them a likely England player in the future.
Until the end of the year, the England A Squad will operate solely on an invite system with a pool of players getting the opportunity to prove themselves worthy of a permanent spot on the squad that will be announced in early January.
The four Walker Cup men in the England Squad are Tommy Fleetwood ,Matt Haines, Stiggy Hodgson and Chris Paisley. Devon Champion Billy Hemstock, British Boys Champion and England Under 18 Champion Tom Lewis and Home Internationalists Matt Nixon and James Robinson have been promoted from the lower squads, while US college-based Darren Renwick was an England A Squad member two years ago.
The nine-strong Under 18 Squad contains three players promoted from the Under 16 Squad. Oliver Carr, English Under 16 Champion Seb Crookall-Nixon and Liam Harper from Kent have all been promoted and there are three newcomers to the national squad hierarchy in Curtis Griffiths, Nick Newbold and Ben Taylor.
Griffiths has been successful in Surrey junior events for the past three years and helped the county side to victory in the English Boys County Finals. Newbold, runner-up in the Midland Boys Championship, was one of five players involved in a playoff for the McGregor Trophy this year, won by Crookall-Nixon, while Taylor was also a member of the victorious Surrey squad.
Also in the Under 18 Squad is Chris Lloyd, who has several titles to his credit this year including the Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters, the English County Champions and the Gloucestershire Championship, while he was runner-up to Lewis in the Carris Trophy.
Just seven players have been named in the England Under 16 Squad, all but one being newcomers. Only 2008 English Under 14 Champion Toby Tree was a member of the squad last year.
The newcomers include Robert Burlison from Staffordshire, this year’s English Schools Under 16 Champion, a schools international who finished runner-up in the Douglas Johns Trophy and Patrick Kelly from Lincolnshire who was sixth in the Douglas Johns and has played for the full county team this year.
Also named is Nick Ward, Hertfordshire Under 14 Champion in 2007 and winner of the Scottish Under 14 Championship last year, who this year has set a course record at his club Redbourn with a nine-under-par 61.
Similar to the A and England Squads the two junior squads will also operate an invitee system where further players will be brought in to the programme as guests during the year.
The full list of players includes: -

In the County Champion of Champion event played over 36 holes today Amateur Champion Liam Bell (Cleethorpes) finished in a very creditable 9th place having scored 76 and 72.
The inaugural Junior County Champions Tournament resulted in a three-way tie at Woodhall Spa between Jay Beisser from Essex, Suffolk’s Alastair Hall and James Burnett, the local lad from Lincolnshire.
All three finished on 143, three under par, Beisser after a closing 69, Hall with 71 and Burnett 75 and by the rules of the competition share the title.
Beisser was the first to post the target, his 69 containing eight birdies but also four dropped shots, all this after a magnificent start with five birdies in the first six holes.
“I got off to a flying start and had three successive threes from the first,” he said. “I had a lesson with my coach David Brooks last week to check up on things and I played terrible yesterday with my 74. But it came good today and this tops off a very good season for me. I played solid today but it was a pity I three-putted the 17th, which has proved costly.”
Hall, a double title winner in Suffolk, had three birdies in his 71 after starting with 11 successive pars.
"I'm quite pleased to have won," he said modestly. "I didn't know the situation out on the course but I knew it was close. I didn't know Jay had shot four under but this will be my fifth title of the year so it's been quite successful. I checked and with yesterday’s round I played 29 holes without a bogey,” said Hall. “Then I bogeyed the 15th today but managed to finish with a birdie.”
Burnett, who led by one overnight, in contrast to Beisser made an awful start with three bogeys in the first five holes. “But I managed to steady the ship with a birdie at the sixth and came back in level par,” he said. “It’s nice to finally win a national title.”
The trio finished two strokes ahead of Sam Young from York
shire, who returned 76, and four clear of Wiltshire’s Ben Stow, who shot 71.

Defeat to Derbyshire, despite superb fightback in Singles....
In the season's final match, a friendly against Derbyshire at Burton on Trent GC, Captain Les Toyne fielded the usual 1sts/2nds combined team including himself and Vice-Captain Paul Morrison.
A shock foursomes result of 5-0 in favour of our hosts, despite several closely fought games, left Lincs with the proverbial 'mountain to climb' but, in displaying the spirit that runs through this squad, Lincs won 7 of the 10 Singles to finally succumb to an 8-7 defeat.
In what was Les' final match as Captain, he again congratulated the players on their Anglian League successes over the summer and thanked them, and the Officials of the Union, for their support over his last 4 years as Captain. Match Result

It's Lincolnshire at the double.....
In a fantastic day for Lincolnshire golf both the 1st and 2nd teams won the Anglian League title following their final matches today, against Cambridgeshire.
The 1sts, playing at Elsham GC, needed a victory to win the title from their visitors and got off to a fine start by taking a 3-1 lead from the morning's foursomes. The Singles seemed to be well on track to achieve the required 3.5 pts for victory as the 8 games each approached the turn, but holes 10-12 were kind to Cambridge and, briefly, things got a little tight. However the 'crisis' was averted shortly afterwards and Lincolnshire ran out victors by 8.5-3.5, which belied the resiliant performance of their visitors in the afternoon. In his victory speech, Captain Les Toyne paid tribute to not only the day's team but the County squad as a whole, which had delivered the double. Match Result
The 2nds, under the captaincy of Paul Morrison, knew they had to beat Cambridgeshire at Brampton Park to win back the title from their hosts. Following a wonderful mornings golf they led the foursomes by 3½ - ½. This gave them a good platform to collect the other 3 points needed for victory. During the course of the afternoon the games ebbed and flowed and a buggy became the order of the day for Paul as even his long legs could not get him to all the places he wanted to be at the same time!! The early matches were not going too well but a wonderful fight-back from Matt Veall who was 3 down with 3 to play but managed a half settled nerves a little. In the 3rd game Patrick Kelly had a convincing 5&4 win and with further wins from Jamie Thorpe, Scott Freer and Matt Haynes victory was achieved by the margin of 8 - 4. Joe Lippett. Sam Sharpe and Steve Brattan all collected points during the day for a great team victory. Match Result

Particular mention, and thanks, must go to the Greenstaff who worked tirelessly all day to get, and keep the course playable throughout.Full Result Click Here

A good day for Lincs in penultimate round of Anglian League fixtures....
Lincolnshire today faced Northamptonshire with the 1sts away at Peterborough Milton GC and the 2nds at Seacroft GC.
The 1sts, only able to complete a few holes of practice yesterday afternoon due to the host club holding their Captains Day, seemed to be fairing reasonably well in the foursomes until the matches reached the last 3 or 4 holes, at which point matters turned swiftly in favour of the hosts resulting in them holding a 3-1 lunchtime lead, and Lincs with a 'mountain to climb'.
Captain Les Toyne was pleased with the way the draw for the afternoon singles came out and half way through the afternoon with only 2 matches narrowly down, the target of 5.5 pts from the afternoons matches looked a real possibility. The advantage was maintained and it came down to needing 1 point from the last two games on the course. Half a point was secured in the penultimate match by Adam Keogh which left 'anchor man' Liam Bell needing to win his last hole to secure the other half point. His opponent, with the honour, pushed his tee shot slightly and found water, Liam hit the fairway and then effectively won the hole with his 160 yd approach to 10 feet. A thrilling match had been won 6.5-5.5 pts. Match results
The 2nds also recorded an important win, albeit narrowly. They did however achieve it in a more conventional way, leading 2.5-1.5 after the foursomes and extending the margin to 2 pts following the singles, to gain a 7-5 victory. Match results
In terms of the leagues, the defeat of Suffolk 1sts by Norfolk today means that Lincs trail their next opponents, Cambridgeshire, by a point, and victory in that final game, at Gainsborough GC on 6th Sept, will guarantee Lincs the spoils.
The 2nds are in exactly the same position in that they will lift the title if they beat Cambridgeshire at Brampton Park GC on the same day. 1st Team results/table, 2nd Team results/table

Coupland's superb run at the English ends....
Dave Coupland (Boston) was knocked out in this afternoons Semi-Final of the English Amateur Championship, at Rye GC.
Having needed 6 extra holes to beat his Q-Final opponent, Matt Haines (Rochester & Cobham), in the morning, Coupland soon found himself on the back foot in the afternoon as Farren Keenan (Sunningdale) got off to a flyer with 3 birdies in the first 5 holes to be 4up. Coupland persevered but had few answers to the fine form of Keenan, who wrapped up the match on the 13th.
Nonetheless, it was a fantastic performance by the Lincolnshire man and one which will surely compound his standing at National level, on the back of several other fine performances this season.
The adventure all started at the beginning of the week when he lay joint 4th after the first round of qualifying at Littlestone GC, having shot 2 under par. An 8 over par round at Rye GC on Tuesday, in very testing conditions, left him on the cut line of the top 64 and ties.
As a result he had to play in the 'Preliminary' round of the matchplay, first thing on Wednesday morning. Starting at 6.38am he beat Ryan Evans (Wellingborough) by 2&1 and then followed that up with victory over Tom Hayes (West Byfleet) by 1 hole.
Thursday morning's second round match was another close encounter, this time just getting the better of Sam Haywood (Rotherham), again by 1 hole. His third round match later in the day saw him overcome Luke Collins (Mendip Spring) by 2&1.

LINCOLNSHIRE TAKE EASTERN INTER COUNTIES TITLE......
In a thrilling finish to four rounds of three-ball foursomes, played over the weekend, Lincolnshire just squeezed home this afternoon at a very windy, and sometimes wet Seacroft GC.
With 10 pts available in each round of matches, to each team, Lincolnshire took 6 on Saturday morning from the match with Cambridgeshire and Suffolk and followed that up in the afternoon with an excellent 8.5 pts, from Leicestershire & Rutland and Norfolk. Overnight Lincolnshire led with 14.5 pts from both Essex and Hertfordshire who were on 12.5.
A stunning haul of 9 pts from the match with Bedfordshire and Northamptonshire increased the lead to 3.5 pts from Hertfordshire (20), with Essex a further half-a-point back.
The final round of matches saw Lincolnshire up against their two closest rivals and led to an incredibly tense afternoon. Essex, the defending champions, made a very strong start and looked to be en route for a dramatic victory but their efforts were finally quashed when Lincolnshires final pairing of Veall and Sheriff secured a vital win over their Essex counterparts on the 17th green.
Lincolnshire's pairings throughout the weekend were: James Burnett (Sleaford) and Steve Dixon (Normanby Hall), Simon Richardson (Boston West) and Adam Wainwright (Gainsborough), Levi Desmond (Belton Woods) and Sam Sharpe (Greetham Valley), Liam Bell and Steve Brattan (both Cleeethorpes) and, Ben Sheriff (Gainsborough) and Matt Veall (Seacroft). Ably led by Captain, Les Toyne and Vice Captain Paul Morrison, this was a fantastic team performance. However, special mention and congratulations go to the pairing of Burnett/Dixon who, despite playing at the top of the order in each round of matches, took the maximum 8 pts from their matches...a very rare feat.
Final standings: 1 Lincs (27.5 pts), 2 Essex (26.5), 3 Herts (24), 4 Leics & Rutland (22.5), 5 Cambs (19.5), 6 Northants (17), 7 Norfolk (16.5), 8 Beds (16), 9 Suffolk (10.5).

The 2nds hosted their Norfolk counterparts at Grimsby where, again a very close game ensued, and again there was a positive outcome for Lincs, with a 7.5-4.5 victory.
